UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Praises Algeria’s Role in Addressing the Middle East Crisis

Algiers, Algeria | January 21st, 2025 —In an address at the United Nations headquarters on Monday, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres extended his gratitude to Algeria for inviting him to deliver a statement on the Middle East crisis, including the ongoing Palestinian plight. The UN chief emphasized the urgency of achieving a sustainable resolution to the longstanding conflict, highlighting Algeria’s pivotal role in fostering dialogue and regional cooperation.

Guterres also commended nations, such as Qatar for their relentless efforts in facilitating a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, where 16 months of relentless bombardments have inflicted untold suffering. This ceasefire, reached between the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and the Zionist entity, represents a vital step toward ending what he described as a “genocidal campaign” in the besieged enclave.

A Roadmap for Lasting Peace in Gaza

Addressing the newly brokered ceasefire, Guterres urged both parties to adhere to their commitments, stressing that this framework must pave the way for the liberation of detainees and the establishment of a “permanent” truce in Gaza. “The United Nations is steadfast in its dedication to supporting these efforts, particularly in delivering humanitarian aid across the entirety of the Palestinian territory,” he asserted.

Guterres outlined four critical measures essential for the ceasefire to translate into tangible improvements on the ground:

1. Unimpeded Access for Humanitarian Agencies:
   Guterres called for unhindered access for UN agencies, including the UNRWA, to fulfill their humanitarian missions. “Rapid and secure access must be granted through all available crossings and channels to deliver vital supplies—food, water, medicine, fuel, and shelter—while repairing widespread destruction, especially in northern Gaza,” he emphasized. The UN leader further demanded unrestricted access for local and international organizations and private sector actors.
2. Ensuring Safety and Order for Aid Delivery:
   Stressing the importance of a secure operational environment, Guterres urged all parties to cooperate effectively with the United Nations to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers and prevent looting of supplies. He underscored the necessity of restoring public order and maintaining security to facilitate the delivery of essential services and resources.
3. Immediate Assistance and Medical Evacuations:
   The Secretary-General highlighted the need to prioritize medical evacuations for the injured and ensure commercial supplies meet the growing demands of Gaza’s beleaguered population. “I appeal to Member States to accommodate the wounded and to facilitate the flow of goods essential for the survival of the Palestinian people,” he stated.
4. Protecting Civilians and Media Access:
   Guterres underscored the imperative to safeguard civilians and enable displaced populations to return to their communities without fear. He also called for international media to gain unrestricted access to Gaza to provide accurate, on-the-ground reporting.

Mounting Concerns Over West Bank Annexation

Guterres expressed grave concern over the deteriorating conditions in the occupied West Bank, citing relentless airstrikes, illegal settlement expansions, and plans for potential annexation by the Zionist regime. Such actions, he warned, constitute severe violations of international law and threaten the territorial integrity of Palestinian lands.

“The annexation of even a part of the West Bank would represent a flagrant breach of international norms. Stability in the Middle East hinges on decisive actions toward a two-state solution, rooted in UN resolutions and prior agreements,” Guterres declared.

Urging international solidarity, Guterres reiterated the UN’s unwavering commitment to advancing peace and stability in the region. He appealed to the Security Council and UN Member States to hold violators accountable and to ensure conditions conducive to reconstruction and recovery in Palestine.
