ALGIERS- In a significant development, the United Nations Security Council has endorsed a draft press release today, initiated by Algeria, Guyana, and Slovenia, addressing the pressing issues of famine and the safety of humanitarian workers in the Gaza Strip. The initiative comes amidst escalating tensions in the region since the unprecedented Zionist aggression began on October 7th.

The unanimously approved document expresses “concern” over Zionist airstrikes that claimed the lives of seven members of the World Central Kitchen two weeks ago. “This appalling attack brings the number of humanitarian workers killed in Gaza during the conflict to 224, more than three times the number of humanitarian workers killed in any listed conflict in one year,” reads the statement.

Transparent Investigation Demanded

The Security Council members, who convened last Friday to discuss famine and the safety of humanitarian workers in Gaza, assert the imperative need for “accountability,” demanding a transparent investigation. They further call for the protection of humanitarian workers, infrastructure, and operations conducted under the auspices of international law.

Additionally, the Security Council members reiterate their “deep concern” regarding the human toll of the ongoing Zionist aggression in Gaza, the catastrophic humanitarian situation, and the looming threat of imminent famine in the Palestinian enclave.

Full Support for UN Agency Efforts

The Council calls for the immediate lifting of the Zionist blockade and facilitation of humanitarian aid delivery. It also emphasizes full compliance with international law, international humanitarian law, and international human rights legislation, demanding a sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Moreover, the Council expresses its full support for the Humanitarian Coordinator and Reconstruction for Gaza, “within the framework of resolution 2720 (2023),” as well as for the efforts of all personnel and UN agencies, including the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East), “working to provide humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.”

Lastly, the Council condemns all acts of violence targeting civilians, with the death toll rising to 33,545 martyrs and 76,094 wounded since October 7th.
