Algiers, Algeria | May 28, 2024 — The United Nations Security Council has convened an emergency meeting at the request of Algeria to address the recent Zionist airstrike on a displacement camp in Rafah that resulted in 45 deaths and 249 injuries. This session comes amidst growing international condemnation and demands for a ceasefire, which Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has yet to implement.

Relentless Bombardments

Despite widespread denouncements, the Zionist entity intensified its airstrikes on Rafah on Tuesday. The attacks followed a Sunday night strike on a displacement camp, igniting global outrage as the world is reeling from the heart-wrenching images of decapitated babies and burned bodies. The carnage on Sunday targeted a tented camp in what was deemed a “safe” zone, leading to the deaths of at least 45 Palestinian civilians and injuring 249 others, predominantly women and children.

Global Reactions and Calls for Accountability

Palestinian authorities condemned the strike as a deliberate act against civilians. The Palestinian Ministry of Health highlighted that the attack disproves Zionist claims of safe zones within Gaza. The Hamas resistance movement has called for widespread protests in response.

International bodies and leaders have demanded thorough investigations. UN Middle East envoy Tor Wennesland urged the Zionist entity to conduct a “complete and transparent” investigation and implement measures to protect civilians. UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk echoed these calls, expressing horror at the attack and demanding accountability for the perpetrators.

International Leaders Speak Out

European Union Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell and French President Emmanuel Macron have called for an immediate halt to the attacks. Borrell emphasized the need to implement the International Court of Justice’s ruling, while Macron called for adherence to international law and a ceasefire. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the massacre, promising to hold Israeli leaders accountable.

Emergency UN Security Council Meeting

The UN Security Council’s emergency meeting, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, was requested by Algeria, a non-permanent member. The session will address the situation in Rafah and the broader implications of continued hostilities in Gaza.

On the Ground in Rafah

The aftermath of the strike has left the camp in ruins, with images showing burned tents and vehicles. Palestinian civil defense teams found numerous charred bodies and dismembered limbs, painting a grim picture of the violence. Mohammad al-Mughayyir, a civil defense official, described the harrowing scenes of injured children, women, and the elderly.

Humanitarian Crisis and International Response

The UN and humanitarian organizations have called for urgent action to protect civilians. The UNRWA described Gaza as “hell on earth,” highlighting the dire humanitarian situation.

Noting that the ongoing war has displaced approximately 800,000 Palestinians, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
