UN Security Council Fails to Adopt Resolution on Palestine’s Membership

ALGIERS- The United Nations Security Council failed on Thursday to adopt a resolution presented by Algeria on behalf of the Arab Group, recommending the admission of the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations Organization.
The text garnered 12 votes in favor, 1 against, with the United States casting their veto, and 2 abstentions.
During the Security Council meeting, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf reiterated the importance of granting full membership to Palestine to safeguard the two-state solution and maintain peace, stability, and security throughout the Middle East.
Attaf also warned that “any procrastination or hesitation in implementing this approach will have serious consequences and, in the current situation, will amount to a green light for the Israeli occupation to continue its plans based on plunder and expansion, on one hand, and extremism and stubbornness, on the other.”
The Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, underscored that “each American veto on Gaza is not just a voting statistic in the UN Security Council. We must not forget that it also comes with a terrible price: the lives of thousands of civilians in Gaza.”
