UN Security Council Reaffirms Central Role of Algiers Agreement for Mali

ALGIERS- On Saturday, the United Nations Security Council reaffirmed the central role of the 2015 Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, stemming from the Algiers process.
In a statement, the Security Council urged “all signatory parties to resume dialogue and commit to the implementation of the agreement to ensure peace and stability in Mali.”
The Council noted the closure of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) on December 31, 2023, after ten years of presence, in accordance with Resolution 2690 (2023), following the request of the Transitional Government in Mali.
While acknowledging the significant efforts of MINUSMA leaders and personnel since 2013, the Council emphasized the central role of the 2015 Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, arising from the Algiers process.
Additionally, the Security Council recognized the role played by the transitional government of Mali during the withdrawal of MINUSMA. They underscored the need for full and ongoing cooperation from the transitional government, including adherence to its ongoing obligations under the Status of Forces Agreement.
In conclusion, they affirmed their full commitment to promoting peace and security in Mali and the region, according to the statement.
