ALGIERS- Researcher Mohamed Doumir recently brought to light a remarkable revelation concerning the city of Oujda, shedding light on its historical ties to Algeria and the controversial manner in which Morocco came to possess it by the Sultan of Marrakech through treacherous means.
In a candid interview on Echourouk TV, Doumir noted that Oujda was an integral part of Algeria for centuries, tracing its roots back to ancient times and the era preceding the birth of Christ. He emphasized that during the establishment of Algeria in the 16th century, Oujda was under the dominion of the Algerian state, specifically within the jurisdiction of the Zayani state, whose capital resided in Tlemcen. Moreover, the city’s geographical boundaries encompassed the territories of both the Hammadi and Zirid states.

According to Doumir, Oujda fell into the hands of the Sultan of Marrakech during a period of political turmoil in the region. He added that the Sultan took advantage of the chaos that ensued when the Bey of Oran rebelled against the Bey in Algiers. The Algerian state, weakened by internal conflicts, was unable to reclaim Oujda, ultimately leading to its occupation by French colonial forces.
