ALGIERS- Amidst the unfolding crisis triggered by a military coup against President Muhammad Bazoum in Niger, the Union of African Muslim Scholars has taken a resolute stance against foreign interventions. Drawing inspiration from Algeria’s principled rejection of external interference, the Union advocates for diplomatic and political solutions to address the crisis, reflecting the collective vision and mission of its members hailing from 47 sub-Saharan African nations.
In response to the military coup and subsequent events in Niger, the Union of African Muslim Scholars has meticulously monitored the situation, gravely concerned about its potential repercussions on both Niger and neighboring countries in the region. This apprehension led the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Monetary Union to impose stringent sanctions on Niger as a punitive measure.
While the possibility of military intervention to reinstate President Mohammad Bazoum remained on the table, disparate viewpoints among regional nations emerged, highlighting the complexity of the situation. Recognizing the imminent threats posed by the crisis to Niger’s security and stability, especially due to the activities of terrorist factions in the region, the Union intervened with a comprehensive statement.
Central to this statement is the Union’ solidarity with the people of Niger during these tumultuous times. The Union emphasizes the necessity for national cohesion and unity, urging the people of Niger to transcend divisions for the greater good.
Advocating for a peaceful resolution between the ruling military council in Niger and the ECOWAS member states, the Union stresses the urgency to lift the sanctions and avert the specter of warfare. It highlights the perilous consequences of conflict escalation, underscoring the region’s vulnerability due to the presence of active terrorist groups.
Acknowledging and endorsing the mediation efforts spearheaded by a group of scholars from Nigeria, the neighboring country, the Union extends gratitude to those who initiated and contributed to this diplomatic initiative. These peace efforts serve as a testament to the African spirit of cooperation and unity during crises.
The Union issues a stern warning against external interference by countries outside the region, citing historical precedents where such interventions have ignited bitter struggles for power and influence, leaving innocent populations to bear the brunt of geopolitical clashes.
In a poignant conclusion, the Union appeals to Muslims across Africa and around the world to offer prayers for the swift resolution of the crisis in Niger, hoping for a resolution that minimizes damage and restores stability to the nation.
In essence, the Union of African Muslim Scholars emerges as a beacon of rationality, advocating for peaceful solutions and highlighting the dangers of external manipulation.
