ALGIERS- In a powerful demonstration of their shared commitment to combat the drug trade and the influx of narcotics, Algeria and Libya have announced their intention to update bilateral agreements. This decision was reached during a crucial meeting held on Monday between Algeria’s Minister of the Interior, Local Assemblies, and Regional Planning, Brahim Merad, and his Libyan counterpart, Imed Trabelsi.

In an official statement released by the Ministry of the Interior, the primary objective of this update is to confront the concerted efforts of certain parties seeking to flood both nations with drugs and psychotropic substances.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Brahim Merad remarked, “It is high time to update these conventions, taking into account the evolving landscape and the nefarious attempts made by certain entities to inundate our two brotherly countries with psychotropic drugs and narcotics. These actions are likely orchestrated by forces aiming to inflict harm upon our nations.”

He went on to underline the interwoven security interests of Libya and Algeria, stating, “The security of Libya is closely linked to that of Algeria. Any threat to Libya is a potential threat to Algeria, in line with the vision of our President.”

Minister Merad further emphasized “the inherent right of Algeria and Libya to defend themselves jointly, guided by a common strategy outlined by the leadership of both nations.”

General Imaed Trabelsi, who has interacted with Minister Merad on numerous occasions, including gatherings of Arab Ministers of the Interior, disclosed that “it was during these meetings that the decision to hold bilateral discussions was conceived, aiming to address the challenges both countries face in their battle against various forms of criminal activities.”

Expanding on this initiative, General Trabelsi declared that both nations have resolved to establish a comprehensive joint security plan. This plan will leverage their collective experiences and expertise, reinforcing their united front in tackling these pressing security concerns.

The decision to renew bilateral conventions between Algeria and Libya in the fight against drug-related crimes signals a renewed determination to safeguard the well-being of their people and fortify the longstanding fraternal ties that bind these two North African nations. With their common objective, Algeria and Libya are set to present a robust and unified response to the challenges posed by the drug trade.
