ALGIERS- In recent weeks, Xavier Driencourt, the former French ambassador to Algeria, has emerged as a prominent figure in the French media, particularly those known for their right-wing tendencies. Driencourt’s sudden rise to prominence has been accompanied by a series of provocative statements and articles targeting Algeria.
A History of Provocation
The author of the book “The Algerian Enigma”‘s involvement in the debate surrounding the Algerian national anthem, specifically the decree signed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has become a focal point for his inflammatory remarks. On various platforms, including Sud Radio and Le Figaro, he has insinuated that the decree was a deliberate attempt to invoke Algeria’s colonial past to send a message to France. Such claims not only lack substantial evidence but also serve to heighten tensions between the two nations.
Right-Wing Tendencies and Obsessions
Examining the media platforms through which Driencourt has expressed his views reveals his alignment with right-wing ideologies. Le Figaro and Sud Radio, known for their anti-Algerian sentiment, have provided him with platforms to voice his opinions. It is important to note that the French right-wing has historically been preoccupied with a concept called “French Algeria,” which romanticizes the country’s colonial past and often fuels animosity towards Algeria.
Resentment and Frustration
Driencourt’s persistent attacks on Algeria may also stem from his professional difficulties during his tenure as the French ambassador. His second term, spanning from 2017 to 2020, proved to be a challenging period. He made demands of the Algerian authorities regarding French companies’ economic and legal disputes, which were ultimately rejected. These setbacks might have left him resentful and frustrated, potentially fueling his animosity towards Algeria.
Personal Controversies
One significant event that appears to have triggered Driencourt’s ongoing campaign against Algeria was his involvement during the “popular (Hirak) movement” period. There were suspicions about his positions and interference in internal affairs, leading to his flight from being expelled from his diplomatic post. Driencourt’s subsequent request to President Emmanuel Macron to relieve him of his duties due to his perceived inability to fulfill his diplomatic duties further accentuated his failure during his second term.
