ALGIERS–As we commemorate the French national holiday today, it becomes imperative to pause and acknowledge the overlooked chapters of our history, the harrowing episodes that have indelibly influenced our nation. Today, we solemnly recall the sorrowful massacre that unfolded on this very date in 1953, a year preceding the triumphant war of national liberation. The haunting echoes of that fateful day resurface, urging us to confront the past and advocate for official France to extend its recognition and offer a heartfelt apology. It is through these acts of remembrance and reconciliation that we can strive towards a more inclusive and compassionate future for all.

In the annals of history, the Place de la Nation massacre stands as a chilling testament to the depths of human cruelty and the perversion of justice. The peaceful demonstration organized by the PPA-MTLD, a movement fighting for democratic freedoms, should have been a symbol of hope and unity. Instead, it became a harrowing scene of bloodshed and horror, forever staining the streets of Paris. The unjustifiable actions of the police, who callously opened fire on unarmed and pacifist Algerians, resulted in the tragic loss of seven innocent lives and left countless others wounded and traumatized.

This forgotten massacre served as a chilling prelude to the infamous events of October 17, 1961, under the command of the Pétainist prefect Maurice Papon.

What is truly distressing is the subsequent response of official France, particularly during the era of President Mitterrand. Rather than confronting the horrifying truth and seeking justice for the victims, a collective blind eye was turned to this atrocity. The refusal to hold the torturer prefect, Maurice Papon, accountable for his role in the carnage and the subsequent failure to prosecute the confessed assassin of Larbi Ben M’hidi, Paul Aussares speak volumes about the stark inequality in the pursuit of justice. While Papon faced trial and conviction for his crimes against deported Jews during World War II, he managed to evade judgment for his complicity in the Place de la Nation massacre.

This glaring double standard not only undermines the principles of justice and equality but also perpetuates a dangerous narrative of impunity. The lives of those Algerians who lost their lives in that tragic event, and the pain endured by their families and communities, deserve to be acknowledged and honored. Their memories should serve as a reminder of the importance of accountability and the imperative to confront the dark chapters of history.

President Emmanuel Macron, who speaks of the importance of confronting our past, seems to overlook these historical injustices. His refusal to apologize for France’s heinous crimes committed during the colonial era is evidence of a xenophobic, haughty, and “orientalist” approach that still lingers in Paris’s relationship with Algeria.

We cannot simply turn the page on this dark chapter of history; we must confront it head-on. The wounds inflicted by colonialism and its violent aftermath are still raw for many. The only path to healing and reconciliation lies in a formal and official apology from official France. It is time for the government to acknowledge the pain and suffering caused by these past atrocities.

To truly address the wounds of the past, Macron must step forward and demonstrate genuine remorse. It is not enough to speak of the importance of confronting our past, while disregarding the cries for justice and healing. France must confront its xenophobic and colonial past, offering an apology that carries the weight of accountability and a commitment to a more equitable future.

As we look back on the forgotten massacre at Place de la Nation, we must vow to never forget the injustice that unfolded on those fateful streets. It is only through acknowledging and addressing the past that we can hope to build a future rooted in truth, justice, and genuine reconciliation. The pursuit of justice should know no bounds, and those responsible for perpetrating such heinous acts should be held accountable, regardless of their position or the passage of time. The victims of the Place de la Nation massacre, and all victims of systemic violence and oppression, deserve nothing less than a resolute commitment to truth, remembrance, and the relentless pursuit of justice.
