Urgent Actions Needed to Provide Humanitarian Aid to Gaza, Stresses Algerian UN Ambassador

Algiers, Algeria | July 2nd 2024 — Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, emphasized the critical need for immediate humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, warning that failure to act would lead to a humanitarian catastrophe of historical significance.
Addressing the United Nations Security Council
During today’s United Nations Security Council meeting focused on humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza, Ambassador Bendjama highlighted the severe conditions of hunger and malnutrition afflicting the region.
Urgent Need for Swift Aid Delivery
To prevent a large-scale famine in Gaza, Bendjama stressed the necessity of rapid and effective measures to ensure aid reaches the northern parts of the Strip. “Rapid and efficient measures are essential to secure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the northern sector,” he asserted.
Ineffectiveness of the December Security Council Resolution
Bendjama critiqued the December Security Council resolution, which was intended to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He noted the resolution’s ineffectiveness in light of current realities on the ground. “The events and realities on the ground have proven the ineffectiveness of this resolution,” he remarked.
Decline in Aid Deliveries
The Ambassador pointed out that since the resolution’s adoption, there has been a significant reduction in the number of trucks entering Gaza daily. “At the time of the resolution’s adoption, around 100 trucks entered Gaza daily. Before October 7, approximately 500 trucks were delivering aid to the region each day,” he explained. Bendjama underscored the persistent challenges faced by humanitarian workers in accessing the area, calling for more effective solutions to these obstacles.
Call for International Cooperation and Urgent Action
In his address, Bendjama urged the international community to cooperate and take immediate actions to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “Without urgent and decisive measures, the world will witness a humanitarian disaster that will be recorded in the darkest pages of history,” he warned.
The Ambassador’s call to action is intended to mobilize international efforts to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need in Gaza, thereby preventing further deterioration of an already dire situation.
