ALGIERS- On Thursday, Vietnamese Ambassador to Algeria, Trần Quốc Khánh, led a poignant ceremony to commemorate the Algerian journalists who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in Vietnam half a century ago. The solemn event took place at the memorial plaque situated on Journalistes Việt Nam 8/3/1974 Street in Bir Mourad Raïs District, Algiers.

March 8, 1974, marks a somber day in the history of Algerian journalism, as 15 journalists and technicians from Algeria, alongside nine Vietnamese journalists and three flight crew members, perished in a devastating plane crash while accompanying then-President of Algeria, Houari Boumediene, on an official visit to Vietnam.

To honor the memory of the deceased, both Vietnam and Algeria erected memorial plaques in their respective countries. In Vietnam, a memorial site was established at the crash site in Hanoi’s outlying district of Sóc Sơn during the State visit to Vietnam by the late President Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria in October 2000. Ahead of the 50th anniversary of the accident, the site underwent renovations by the municipal People’s Committee and is set to be reopened.

In 2013, the Algerian Government paid tribute to the 15 journalists by unveiling a memorial plaque and naming a street “Journalistes Việt Nam” in the capital city, a lasting tribute to their sacrifice and dedication to their profession.

Ambassador Khánh’s participation in a forum organized by Algeria’s national newspaper El Moudjahid the day before underscored the importance of remembering and honoring the journalists who lost their lives in service to their profession. The forum provided an opportunity to reflect on their contributions and the enduring bond between Vietnam and Algeria.

The commemoration serves as a solemn reminder of the risks journalists face in pursuit of truth and underscores the enduring spirit of solidarity between the peoples of Vietnam and Algeria. Through remembrance and reflection, the legacy of the fallen journalists continues to inspire future generations in both countries.
