ALGIERS- The Wali of Algiers, Mohamed Abdennour Rabehi, discussed several topics related to the development of the capital. During his appearance on national radio, he shared his ambitious plans for the transportation system in the country’s most populous city.

“Studies are underway to extend the metro lines to Baraki, the international airport of Algiers, and Bab El-Oued,” he announced. “From Bab El-Oued, the line could extend to Ouled Fayet and Draria. The tramway line will also be extended from Ruisseau to Bir Mourad Raïs. Additionally, a 1.7 km stretch from Hay Mokhtar-Zerhouni to Bordj El-Kiffan will save passengers up to twenty minutes by avoiding Bab Ezzouar and making a detour,” he said.

The wali then went on to discuss the monorail, revealing that a study had been conducted to designate a corridor for an underground or aerial metro. “The simulation was done with the monorail, which is an aerial metro that will extend over approximately 67 km and consist of two lines,” he explained.

And to add: “The first line will start from Hay Mokhtar-Zerhouni and pass by the Safex, the great mosque of Algiers, the Sablettes promenade, and the coast (Birkhadem) until arriving at Sidi Abdellah (Zéralda). The second line will start at Oued Smar, cross the metro station being built near Houari-Boumediene University (Bab Ezzouar), pass in front of the Nelson-Mandela stadium, and continue until the coast, Aïn Malha, Gué de Constantine to Birtouta where there will be relay parking lots. This will allow people from neighboring wilayas to park their vehicles and take the monorail.”

Here are the renovation projects of the Casbah

The Casbah, one of the oldest districts of Algiers, is undergoing a series of renovation projects. The first official of the wilaya of Algiers spoke about the progress of these projects, stating that many have already been completed, with seven currently in progress.

Additionally, five new projects are set to begin soon, with five more under consideration. The renovation of Dar Essof, Dar Essadaqa, Dar Khedaoudj ElAmya, Dar Ahmed Pacha, and Hammam Sidna are all being studied for feasibility.

While the ambition for the renovation work has always been high, the official acknowledged that it is important to be realistic and logical when making decisions. Redoing the entire Casbah will take a significant amount of time and resources.

In preparation for the summer season, the wali of Algiers has implemented measures to ensure its success. Thirty-seven forests, including Bouchaoui and Bainem, will be equipped with kiosks, showers, and public toilets to accommodate families and visitors. The Bouchaoui forest has already been cleaned up, with illegal occupants removed. Security measures will also be put in place to ensure the safety of visitors.

Finally, a plan is being developed to preserve the 5000 ha forest area, including the preparation of tanks to be used in case of fire. With these efforts, Algiers is working to improve its historic district and provide a safe and enjoyable summer experience for all.

Drinking water supply: “We will be in a comfortable position from 2025”

When asked about the water supply in Algiers, the wali provided a detailed response. He explained that the capital city relies on three methods for its water supply: dams, underground water, and desalination stations. The dams provide 150,000 m3 of water daily, while nearly 300 wells operated underground provide 320,000 m3 daily. The desalination stations produce 400,000 m3 per day, bringing the total daily production to 850,000 m3.

The wali also mentioned the various stations in service, including Zéralda, Palm Beach, Aïn Bénian, Bateau Cassé, and Tamentefoust. He noted that another station, Corso, will be operational this summer and will supply the capital with 80,000 m3 per day. Additionally, two stations, Cap Djinet and Fouka, are currently under construction and will be functional before the end of 2024.

However, the wali acknowledged that climate change has impacted the water supply in some municipalities. As a result, 50% of municipalities are supplied every other day for eight to twelve hours, while the remaining 50% are supplied six to eight hours a day.

Regarding the relocation operation, the wali assured that it is ongoing. He announced that nearly 10,000 housing units will be distributed in July, including 7,800 AADL housing units, 1,500 rental promotional housing units (LPL), and 602 participatory social housing units (LSP). The LPL housing program in Algiers includes nearly 10,000 units, with construction already underway for 3,000 units and the construction of 5,000 others awaiting launch.

The wali gave more details and revealed that “2200 units will be distributed in Boumerdès, 2117 in Ouled Fayet, 550 in Ouled Mendil, 1430 in Birtouta and 2000 Bordj El Bahri”. According to Mr. Rabehi, “more than 14,000 housing units, including 11,000 AADL and 3,129 LPL (public rental housing) have been distributed since October”.

Overall, the wali’s response provided a comprehensive overview of the water supply and housing situation in Algiers, highlighting both the progress made and the challenges that still need to be addressed.
