Algiers, Algeria | January 11th, 2025 — Walid Sadi, President of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and Minister of Sports, officially declared his candidacy for a new term as FAF president during the elective General Assembly scheduled for February 27.
Speaking to national television following the Extraordinary General Assembly at the Army Club in Beni Messous, where members voted on amendments to the internal regulations, Sadi reaffirmed his intention to pursue another Olympic mandate, emphasizing his commitment to institutional reform and enhanced sports governance.
Elected in September 2023 following the resignation of Djamel Zefizef, Sadi took over the Olympic mandate initiated by former president Chérif Mellal in April 2021.
Expressing gratitude for the General Assembly’s endorsement of the regulatory amendments, Sadi acknowledged the significant delays in the process, stating: “We have fallen behind significantly, harming Algeria’s reputation within international sporting bodies. The revision process had been frozen since 2018. Today, we have fulfilled our promise of institutional alignment.”
Beyond football, Sadi, in his capacity as Minister of Sports, stressed the necessity of broader collaboration for national athletic advancement. He called for greater involvement of professional clubs in promoting a diverse array of sports disciplines, not limited to football alone.
“We have observed a positive response from professional clubs. Our ambition is to see these entities contribute to multiple sports and play a pivotal role in national athletic excellence. My dream is for Algeria to become an Olympic champion through professional clubs, given their significant financial resources and infrastructure,” Sadi concluded.
His re-election bid comes as Algeria continues to emphasize governance reforms and expanded athletic achievements on both national and international platforms.
