Algerian Sports Minister and FAF President Reaffirms Commitment to Media Rights, Calls for a Unified Front in Elevating National Sports Standards
Algiers, Algeria | February 24th, 2025 — Algerian Minister of Youth and Sports, and President of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), Walid Sadi, has unequivocally expressed his ambition to secure the coveted African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, set to take place in Morocco at the end of the year. His remarks, emphasizing Algeria’s determination to claim its second continental championship, were made during an open forum organized by the Algerian Sports Journalists’ Organization at the lecture hall of the 5th of July Stadium in Algiers.
Addressing the challenges faced by journalists in accessing stadiums and covering major sporting events, Sadi reaffirmed his personal commitment to ensuring media professionals are treated with dignity and afforded the necessary facilities to carry out their duties. “I will not tolerate any mistreatment or humiliation of journalists simply for doing their job. The press will be present in full force to cover the upcoming AFCON tournament in Morocco, a significant event for Algeria, and why not return with the continental crown?” he declared.
During the conference, which he co-hosted alongside Minister of Communication Mohamed Meziane, and attended by prominent media figures and sports personalities, Sadi disclosed that the country’s highest authorities have directed the launch of extensive sports development workshops, one of which will be dedicated specifically to sports journalism. This initiative underscores the recognition of the media’s instrumental role in shaping Algeria’s sporting landscape and international image.
Sadi emphasized that sports journalism is as crucial as the athletes themselves, labeling journalists as Algeria’s “ambassadors on the global stage.” He cited the recent controversy surrounding champion boxer Imane Khelif as a prime example of how the media played a pivotal role in defending the nation’s interests. “We all witnessed how Imane Khelif’s case became an international matter, and how Algerian journalism stood united in her defense. This is a testament to the power of sports media in serving the country,” he stated.
The minister further called for a responsible and constructive media approach, urging journalists to promote ethical values, denounce violence, and combat polarization in sports discourse. “We must be a force for good—rejecting fanaticism, fostering a culture of sportsmanship, and elevating public awareness. The influence of sports journalism in shaping policy has grown tremendously in recent years,” he asserted.
Addressing his dual role as Minister of Sports and FAF President, Sadi dismissed any concerns over potential conflicts, stressing that his leadership in both capacities is solely dedicated to national service. “I stand with all those who are genuinely committed to this nation. Holding both responsibilities is not an issue as long as it serves Algeria’s best interests,” he affirmed.
In addition to football, Sadi acknowledged the dire state of Algerian handball, revealing that the disappointing performance at the latest World Championship had reached the attention of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. As a result, the sport will now receive direct presidential oversight, with plans to overhaul and revitalize the national handball structure under his personal guidance.
With AFCON 2025 on the horizon, Walid Sadi’s declarations reflect a broader strategy aimed at reinforcing Algeria’s standing in African and global sports, ensuring media freedom, and cultivating a sporting culture rooted in excellence and national pride.
