Algiers, Algeria | August 12th, 2024 — The Algiers Water and Sanitation Company (SEAAL) has announced a major disruption in the potable water supply affecting fourteen communes across the Algiers and Tipaza provinces. This interruption is the result of a technical fault at the Fouka seawater desalination plant, which is currently under repair.
The disruption stems from a malfunction at the Fouka desalination facility, a crucial infrastructure responsible for a substantial portion of the region’s water production. SEAAL’s statement, as reported by El Khabar, reveals that the fault will cause a reduction in water production by approximately 20,000 cubic meters. This shortfall is anticipated to create significant supply issues across several areas.
Affected Areas
In Tipaza, the communes impacted by the water supply disruption include:
- Kolea
- Douaouda
- Fouka
- Hattatba
- Chaiba
- Bou Ismaïl
- Aïn Tagouraït
- Bou Haroun
- Khemisti
- Sidi Rached
- Tipaza
In Algiers, the disruptions will affect:
- The entire commune of Aïn Benian
- Several neighborhoods in Staoueli, including the city center
- Azur, Plage Palm Beach, El Brija, and the Sidi Fredj road
- Bouchaoui maritime in Chéraga
- The Commandement de la Gendarmerie Nationale and the Postes et Télécommunications neighborhoods
Restoration and Mitigation
SEAAL has indicated that efforts are underway to repair the fault and restore water supply. The agency expects that water service will progressively return to normal as repairs advance and main reservoirs are replenished. The resumption of regular water supply for the affected communes is anticipated to commence by tomorrow morning, Tuesday, August 13.
