Western Sahara: Blinken Affirms American “Full Support” for the UN Process

ALGIERS, August 10, 2023- In a significant diplomatic move, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated the United States’ unwavering commitment to the United Nations-led political process for Western Sahara during a meeting with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf on Wednesday. The discussions centered around the US-Algerian partnership, mutual interests, and regional stability in the Sahel.
Mr. Blinken took to Twitter to express the outcome of the meeting, stating, “I met with Algerian Foreign Minister Mr. Ahmed Attaf to discuss the US-Algerian partnership, and to consult on shared priorities, including stability in the Sahel.” He further emphasized, “We also affirmed our full support for the UN political process for Western Sahara.”

State Department Spokesman Matt Miller provided additional insights into the meeting’s outcomes. He conveyed that Secretary Blinken extended his wholehearted support for the endeavors of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura. De Mistura is engaged in consultations with all relevant parties to facilitate a lasting political solution in Western Sahara.
Moreover, Secretary Blinken took the opportunity to extend congratulations to Minister Attaf following Algeria’s recent election to the United Nations Security Council. This achievement was noted as a testament to Algeria’s diplomatic prowess and its role in international affairs.
During their discussions, Secretary Blinken underscored the United States’ commitment to collaborate closely with Algeria on matters falling within the purview of the Security Council.
