The “real and permanent blackmail” in which the Moroccan regime is engaged in against Spain is the only explanation for the reversal of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, concerning the question of Western Sahara, indicated, on Saturday, the representative of the Sahrawi Arab Republic (SADR) in Europe and with the European Union (EU), Oubi Bouchraya Bachir.
In an interview granted to the review Politis edited by the national daily El-Moudjahid, the Sahrawi diplomat indicated that the change of position of the Spanish Prime Minister which “remains incomprehensible to this day in Spain, is however very easily explained when the question is approached from the angle of the real and permanent blackmail to which the Moroccan regime is engaged against Spain”.
“When we look at relations between Spain and Morocco, from the angle of the real and permanent blackmail that the Moroccan regime is engaging in against Spain, the answer becomes not only clear, but obvious”, explained Bouchraya, noting that “this new position of Sanchez “is the price demanded by the Royal Palace of Morocco to restore relations between the two countries, which have deteriorated considerably since the summer of 2021”.
“Paradoxically, Sanchez’s betrayal has done a great service to the Sahrawi cause in Spain, raising it up the order of Spanish political priorities, creating consensus within the political class around support and solidarity with the Sahrawi people”, he nevertheless explained.
“Sahrawi diplomacy observes these positive changes and accompanies them in order to best defend our fight for liberation in this country. It is the positive side of this unpredictable volte-face which, far from being a reason for discouragement, animates our diplomacy and strengthens the solidarity movement,” he added.
On the other hand, the diplomat pointed out that “Spain, which betrayed the Sahrawi people and the United Nations in 1975 by withdrawing from the (Sahrawi) territory and without organizing the self-determination referendum as promised, no longer no room for error, compromise or maneuver, because it has a historical, political, moral and legal responsibility as the administering power of the territory, de jure, even today”.
Regarding the American position on the Saharawi question, Oubi Bouchraya considered that Biden administration has adopted a completely different approach from that of Donald Trump who, in December 2020, announced that he recognized the alleged Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in contradiction with international law and the traditional position of his country.
“With the advent of Biden administration, an approach contradicting that of Trump was initiated, adopting positions which basically give the impression of the existence of a desire to circumvent the parenthesis opened by the former During this year and last year, respectable positions on the conflict have been expressed, both by the Secretary of State and Pentagon and by Congress and Senate, which we hope will will lead to a restoration of balance by officially reversing Trump’s statement,” Bouchraya said.
