ALGIERS- The United Nations has categorically denied recent media reports claiming that Staffan de Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara, is planning to resign. The UN has dismissed these allegations as completely false speculation.

During a recent press briefing, Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, refuted the rumors and confirmed that de Mistura has no intention of stepping down. Instead, de Mistura is committed to maintaining and intensifying his contacts with all relevant actors and international partners in different formats, including visits and bilateral meetings.

The UN also expressed its appreciation for the support of the members of the Security Council and the Group of Friends of the Sahara, which de Mistura was able to witness during his recent meetings in New York. It is worth noting that all of de Mistura’s predecessors had to resign from their positions, including James Baker, Peter van Walsum, Christopher Ross, and Horst Köhler.
