Algiers, Algeria | July 15th, 2024 — Hamma Salama, President of the Sahrawi National Council, delivered, on Sunday in Algiers, a strong condemnation of Morocco’s policies, accusing the country of escalation, intransigence, and evasion. Speaking on behalf of Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali at the opening of the 12th edition of the Summer University dedicated to the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD), Salama warned of Morocco’s blatant disregard for international legality and its threat to regional security. The event is taking place in Boudouaou, Boumerdès Province, and will continue until July 14.
Ongoing Aggression and War
Salama criticized Morocco’s ongoing aggressive war against the Sahrawi people, highlighting the occupation of Sahrawi territories, the targeting of unarmed civilians with advanced weapons, and the support for organized criminal groups. He accused Morocco of flooding the region with drugs, noting its status as the largest global producer and exporter.
“The Moroccan regime resorts to suspect alliances with malicious forces and colonial expansions to execute hidden agendas and evade internal crises that are no longer just economic and political but have also become social,” Salama stated. He emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to counteract Morocco’s expansionist policies, which threaten peace and stability amid alarming changes in the Sahel and Sahara regions and foreign interventions.
Commitment to UN Plan
Salama expressed deep concern over the non-implementation of the UN settlement plan for Western Sahara, questioning the credibility of the UN due to its double standards and leniency towards Moroccan crimes. He noted that the 1991 UN and African plan, signed by both the Polisario Front and Morocco and approved by the UN Security Council, remains unfulfilled.
“The Polisario Front remains committed to the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Special Envoy to find a just solution within a clear legal framework consistent with international legality. The conflict in Western Sahara is a decolonization issue to be resolved by granting the Sahrawi people their rights, respecting the UN and African Union principles, particularly self-determination and the sanctity of post-independence borders,” Salama emphasized.
Spain’s Historical Responsibility
Salama urged the UN Security Council and the United Nations to enforce international charters and the General Assembly’s recommendations regarding Western Sahara, expedite the end of Morocco’s illegal military occupation, and protect the Sahrawi people and their resources. He called for the lifting of the embargo on occupied Western Sahara and the release of all Sahrawi political detainees, particularly the Gdiem Isik group, imprisoned since 2010.
Furthermore, Salama reminded Spain of its historical responsibility towards the Sahrawi people, condemning Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s negative stance, which contradicts international legality. He insisted that Spain, as the former occupying power, should find a just solution within the framework of international law and act as the administrator of a territory whose people are yet to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.
Support for the Palestinian People
Salama also condemned some European countries for violating European Court of Justice decisions by continuing to plunder Sahrawi resources, thus supporting Morocco’s occupation economy and expansionist colonial projects that alter the demographic structure of occupied Western Sahara.
Expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people, Salama decried the genocidal Zionist aggression since October 7, 2023. “We renew the Sahrawi people’s solidarity with our Palestinian brothers in their legitimate struggle for freedom and the establishment of an independent state with El Quds as its capital,” he reiterated, thanking Algeria for its honorable positions on just causes worldwide, particularly the Palestinian and Sahrawi issues.
