Algiers, Algeria | December 7th, 2024 — Algeria and South Africa, two pillars of African solidarity, have once again demonstrated the profound strength of their partnership during the historic state visit of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to Algeria. Despite the 6,891 kilometers separating the two nations, the bond between Algiers and Pretoria has transcended geographical distances, driven by a shared commitment to freedom, justice, and the advancement of the African continent.
A Convergence of Views and Unified Ambitions
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and President Cyril Ramaphosa met in Algiers, engaging in extensive discussions that underscored their shared vision for resolving regional and international crises. During a joint press conference, President Tebboune emphasized the alignment of views between the two nations on the importance of pursuing political solutions to conflicts, free from external interference.
“We delved into critical regional and global issues, including the Zionist aggression against Gaza and Lebanon, and I commend South Africa’s legal action before the International Court of Justice against these violations. Algeria fully supports this initiative,” Tebboune declared.
The talks also addressed the pressing issue of Western Sahara, with both leaders reaffirming their unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination in accordance with international law. Discussions extended to the geopolitical complexities of the Sahel, Libya, Sudan, and broader African challenges, highlighting a unified approach to bolstering the African Union’s role in addressing these crises.
Reforming Global Governance
In their dialogue, Tebboune and Ramaphosa reiterated the urgency of reforming the United Nations Security Council to rectify historical injustices against Africa. Tebboune underscored the necessity of strengthening Africa’s voice on the global stage, stating, “We must push for reforms that reflect the continent’s rightful place in the international order, consistent with the Syrte Consensus.”
Ramaphosa echoed this sentiment, affirming his belief that Algeria and South Africa’s cooperation serves as a cornerstone for broader African unity. “We stand firm in our call for justice in Palestine and all oppressed nations, and we are deeply committed to promoting Africa’s interests globally,” he said.
Economic Cooperation: A Catalyst for Progress
Beyond political solidarity, the visit marked significant progress in economic collaboration. Tebboune and Ramaphosa presided over the signing of a Strategic Partnership Declaration and five memoranda of understanding, paving the way for intensified bilateral trade and investment. The convening of the 7th session of the Algeria-South Africa High Commission for Cooperation, alongside a business forum, provided a platform for economic stakeholders to explore new avenues of collaboration.
Ramaphosa highlighted the transformative potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in boosting trade between the two nations. “This partnership will not only deepen our bilateral relations but also strengthen Africa’s economic fabric, fostering greater self-reliance and resilience,” he stated.
A Legacy of Solidarity
The historical ties between Algeria and South Africa, rooted in their joint struggles against colonialism and apartheid, continue to inspire their partnership today. Ramaphosa expressed profound gratitude to Algeria for its unwavering support during South Africa’s liberation struggle, including its role as a haven for Nelson Mandela.
“I am honored to walk in the footsteps of a leader who found refuge and inspiration in this great nation,” Ramaphosa remarked, praising Algeria’s enduring commitment to the principles of freedom and dignity.
A Unified Vision for Africa’s Future
The meeting between these two African giants underscores the transformative power of a shared vision. By prioritizing political solutions, advocating for justice, and fostering economic integration, Algeria and South Africa are not only strengthening their bilateral relationship but also championing the aspirations of the entire continent.
As the visit concluded, the two leaders reaffirmed their determination to work hand in hand, ensuring that Africa’s voice is amplified on the global stage and that the dreams of a prosperous, united, and just continent become a reality.
