Algiers, Algeria | November 06th, 2024 — Public outrage has erupted across Morocco following a visit by a delegation of Moroccan journalists to the Zionist entity, triggering widespread condemnations and a wave of indignation on social media. This visit, criticized as an act of “media normalization” and labeled a “moral crime” by activists, has not only shocked Moroccan society but also sparked intense debate over the country’s longstanding solidarity with the Palestinian cause and resistance to any normalization with the Zionist occupation.
Prominent Moroccan news outlet Badil.info described the journalists’ visit as a stark contradiction to the popular sentiment in Morocco, where solidarity with Palestinians is deeply rooted, and any form of engagement with the Zionist regime is fiercely rejected. The delegation, invited by Zionist figurehead Benjamin Netanyahu, arrived on November 4. This visit comes amid ongoing violence inflicted by the Zionist entity upon Palestinians in Gaza and Lebanon, amplifying the disapproval voiced by Moroccans from all walks of life.
Reports from Code initially announced the planned visit, specifying that eight Moroccan journalists from both public and private sectors intended to meet with Zionist officials. Subsequently, the Hespress platform underscored the escalating fury on social media, as Moroccans swiftly took to these platforms to express their disdain for the deliberate act of “media normalization” by these journalists. The timing and nature of the visit have further intensified calls for an absolute rejection of engagement with the Zionist regime.
In a scathing public statement, renowned political figure and human rights advocate Youssef Bousta condemned the delegation, referring to them as “Al Safhajiya Al Mukharabah,” or “corrupt journalists,” accusing them of prioritizing monetary gain over ethical journalism. For Bousta and others, such actions not only undermine the sacrifices of the Palestinian people but also erode the moral fabric of journalism. Similarly, prominent activist Hussein Majdoubi characterized the visit as a “moral crime,” underscoring the belief that this act symbolizes a betrayal of the Palestinian struggle and represents a deep failure to uphold values aligned with human dignity and resistance.
The advocacy group Professionals of Moroccan Media for Palestine and Against Normalization issued a strongly worded statement condemning the visit, particularly in light of the ongoing Zionist aggression in Gaza since October 7, 2023. The group decried this initiative as “an egregious moral decline” among those who, by virtue of their profession, should stand in solidarity with oppressed populations rather than align with the occupying entity. The organization argued that such acts contradict the noble values of journalism, which should be rooted in truth, justice, and unwavering support for human rights.
This group, joined by numerous other Moroccan media professionals, rights organizations, and unions, reiterated its unwavering commitment to opposing any form of normalization with the Zionist regime. Collectively, they emphasized that these journalists, who have willingly participated in this engagement, do not and cannot represent the stance of the Moroccan public, which remains unequivocally committed to Palestinian liberation and unyielding resistance against occupation.
