World Bank Delegation Engages in Strategic Talks with Algerian Ministry of Energy to Strengthen Cooperation

Algiers, Algeria | October 2nd, 2024 — A high-level delegation from the World Bank, headed by Ahmadou Moustapha NDiaye, Director for the Maghreb and Malta within the Middle East and North Africa region, engaged in critical talks on Wednesday with senior officials from Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Mines. The meeting, which marked a significant milestone in strengthening Algeria’s collaboration with the World Bank, focused on advancing cooperation in key energy sectors, particularly those supporting the country’s transition to renewable energy and ensuring long-term energy security.

Abdelkrim Aouissi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, along with other senior officials, welcomed the World Bank delegation, initiating discussions that explored the exchange of technical expertise and support for a range of ambitious projects. Central to the dialogue were Algeria’s strategic goals for energy development, including solar and wind energy expansion, green hydrogen initiatives, regional electricity interconnection, and initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These projects are pivotal in positioning Algeria as a key player in the global energy transition.

Aouissi provided a detailed overview of Algeria’s comprehensive energy strategy, stressing the nation’s ongoing efforts to modernize its infrastructure and diversify its energy sources. Algeria’s focus includes significant developments in hydrocarbons, electricity, and renewable energy sectors. Additionally, he highlighted the country’s innovative approach to hydrogen development and the expansion of its national seawater desalination program. Public-private partnerships, Aouissi noted, are central to the country’s energy policy, and he detailed the success of current collaborations while identifying potential areas for further joint ventures.

He also underscored the importance of the energy sector to Algeria’s economic resilience, stating that “the energy sector is fundamental to Algeria’s economic stability and growth.” He emphasized that through targeted projects such as boosting production capacity, transforming hydrocarbons, expanding petrochemicals, and implementing cutting-edge carbon capture technologies, Algeria aims to secure its long-term energy needs while reducing its environmental impact.

Responding to these initiatives, NDiaye commended Algeria’s progress, particularly its impressive achievements in expanding electricity and gas access across the country. He pointed out that with electrical coverage reaching 99% and gas coverage at 70%, Algeria has established itself as a leader in energy distribution within the region. NDiaye expressed his satisfaction with the depth of the discussions, remarking, “This dialogue has provided invaluable insights into Algeria’s energy sector and its capacity to lead in renewable energy development and regional integration.”

He reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to deepening its cooperation with Algeria, especially in supporting renewable energy projects and the regional electricity grid interconnection. NDiaye emphasized that the World Bank is eager to assist Algeria in diversifying its energy portfolio, enhancing sustainability, and meeting global emissions reduction standards.

This meeting lays the groundwork for intensified collaboration between Algeria and the World Bank, aimed at reinforcing Algeria’s ongoing energy transition and contributing to its economic diversification objectives.
