Algiers, Algeria – December 25, 2023- Algerian international footballer Youcef Attal has broken his silence upon returning to his homeland, expressing his commitment to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to take place in Ivory Coast from January 13. Attal, who arrived in Algiers on Thursday evening, is the first player to join the national team’s training camp at the Sidi Moussa National Technical Centre, which is scheduled to commence this Monday.
The dynamic right-back wasted no time setting the tone for the AFCON preparations, stating, “I am ready to start the training camp; we will prepare well for the AFCON. Our goal is to shine in Ivory Coast to make the Algerian people happy,” upon his arrival at Algiers’ Houari Boumediene International Airport.
When questioned about his professional future, Attal remained evasive, responding, “My future with Nice? I am currently focused on the AFCON, and after that, I will see.” His contract with OGC Nice is set to expire in June next year.
Despite facing legal proceedings in Nice, where the court’s judgment has been adjourned until January 3, and the prosecution has requested a suspended ten-month prison sentence and a €45,000 fine, Attal seems undeterred. He expressed gratitude for the support from the Algerian people, stating, “I received many messages from the Algerian people. It gave me strength. I am not worried because I have not done anything serious. I just wanted to show solidarity with the Palestinian people.” Attal appeared before the Nice court on charges of “incitement to racial hatred based on religion.”
