Algiers- Algeria, May 15, 2024 – Algeria’s higher education sector is making significant strides, as indicated by the latest “Times Higher Education (THE): The Young University Rankings 2024,” where Algeria has emerged as a leader in the Maghreb, Africa, and Arab regions. In an announcement from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research on Wednesday, it was revealed that Algeria has secured the top position in these regions, with 21 Algerian universities being classified in the ranking.

This achievement reflects a notable improvement compared to previous editions of the ranking. In 2023, 11 Algerian universities were ranked, while in 2022, the number stood at 9 institutions. Remarkably, in 2018, only one Algerian university made it to the list. The ranking, which examines 134 million citations from over 16.5 million research publications and surveys conducted among 68,000 researchers, highlights the growing recognition of Algerian higher education institutions on the global stage.

The ranking, initiated in 2012, specifically focuses on universities established less than 50 years ago. Noteworthy is Sidi Bel Abbès University’s inclusion among the top 500 institutions worldwide, underscoring Algeria’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research emphasized that “The Young University Rankings” consider institutions established less than 50 years ago, excluding those without postgraduate programs or fewer than 1000 scientific articles published between 2018 and 2022, with a minimum of 150 articles per year.

The ranking criteria encompass both qualitative and quantitative indicators, including the number of faculty and students, scientific output, and its impact on databases like SCOPUS. It utilizes 13 comprehensive comparison indicators across five main axes: the quality of higher education, the quality of scientific research, citations, international collaboration, and industry impact.

Algeria’s impressive performance in these rankings reflects the concerted efforts of the higher education sector to enhance the standing of national institutions globally and increase their international visibility.
