Youth Engagement in Algeria’s Presidential Elections, : A Mandate for Algeria’s Future, Asserts Higher Council for Youth President Hidaoui

Algiers, Algeria | August 16th, 2024 — In an address delivered in Oran, Mustapha Hidaoui, President of the Higher Council for Youth (CSJ), underscored the critical importance of electoral participation for Algeria’s youth. Speaking at a youth forum hosted by the CSJ at the Pôle Abdelhamid Ibn Badis mosque’s conference hall, Hidaoui emphasized that casting votes in the upcoming presidential election on September 7 represents not only a right but a significant duty for Algeria’s young citizens.
Hidaoui’s remarks came during a well-attended session organized by local CSJ members. He asserted that the youth’s engagement in this electoral process is paramount due to the profound impact the election outcomes will have on Algeria’s future over the next five years and potentially beyond. The president’s comments reflect a broader strategic focus on harnessing the collective potential of Algeria’s younger generation to shape the nation’s political landscape.
In his speech, Hidaoui highlighted the current positive trends among Algerian youth, including their heightened awareness and advanced academic achievements. Despite these advances, he stressed the need for increased societal engagement and active participation in the electoral process. To this end, he proposed the establishment of dedicated awareness cells across neighborhoods, villages, and urban areas to inform and mobilize young voters. These cells are intended to emphasize the importance of robust participation and informed decision-making in the upcoming election.
Hidaoui also took the opportunity to commend Algeria’s recent progress in various domains, particularly in enhancing political participation and strengthening democratic institutions. He noted that these achievements have bolstered public trust in state institutions and reinforced the role of youth and civil society within the governance framework.
As part of his appeal, Hidaoui urged attendees to dedicate the 20-day campaign period leading up to the presidential election to intensify efforts in raising awareness among their peers about the significance of voting and addressing the issue of political and electoral abstention. He stressed the importance of tackling the challenges associated with voter apathy within this vital demographic.
The forum, themed “Go, Youth!” convened approximately 400 young individuals from various communes within Oran. The event featured interactive discussions facilitated by CSJ members, focusing on the imperative of youth involvement in the electoral process and the broader impact of their participation on Algeria’s democratic evolution.
