Algiers, March 24, 2024 – The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Wakfs “Endowments” announced on Sunday that the amount of Zakat al-Fitr ‘the Alms’ has been set at 150 Algerian dinars for this year. This decision was made after consultation with the National Fatwa Commission.
The ministry also stated that the collection of Zakat al-Fitr will begin from the middle of the month of Ramadan, and the funds will be distributed to the needy one or two days before Eid al-Fitr.
Zakat al-Fitr is a religious obligation incumbent upon every Muslim, whether male or female, rich or poor, adult or minor. It must be paid for each member of the family, including children and dependents.
The ministry reiterated that Zakat al-Fitr can be paid in kind (2 kg of dates, wheat, or barley) or in cash. This year, the amount of 150 Algerian dinars corresponds to the average value of 2 kg of basic food in Algeria.
Finally, the ministry called on the faithful to fulfill this religious obligation and to show generosity towards the most deprived.
