Algiers, Algeria | January 05th, 2024 — Algerian authorities have intensified regulatory measures on language-learning institutions, responding to significant deviations from their originally designated purposes. Mustapha Zebdi, President of the Consumer Protection Association, disclosed in an exclusive call with Dzair Tube that several institutions, initially authorized for foreign language instruction, have expanded into unregulated private tutoring, raising critical concerns about educational integrity and student safety.
Zebdi highlighted that many institutions have overstepped their commercial registration limits by offering private lessons across various educational stages, from primary to tertiary education, often introducing non-standard curricula and teaching methods. This deviation, he warned, exposes students—particularly younger learners—to unqualified instructors and unverified content, jeopardizing both educational quality and student security.
In response, the Algerian government has enforced bans targeting institutions that have strayed from their registered educational scope. Zebdi emphasized that this decisive action aims to ensure that language-learning institutions focus exclusively on foreign language instruction, aligning with their commercial licenses and preventing further educational disarray.
Furthermore, Zebdi underscored the government’s commitment to improving formal support classes within the national education system. These structured classes, designed to assist students struggling academically, are being refined to align with the official curriculum. The Ministry of Education has emphasized ensuring qualified instructors and standardized teaching methods, aiming to bridge educational gaps while maintaining rigorous oversight.
Another cornerstone of Algeria’s educational reform is the substantial improvement in teachers’ salaries. Zebdi stressed that enhanced compensation is a pivotal step towards professionalizing the teaching workforce, reducing informal teaching practices, and fostering greater consistency in educational delivery. This initiative is seen as a crucial element in stabilizing the academic landscape and elevating overall learning outcomes.
The overarching objective of these reforms, according to Zebdi, is to cultivate a systematic, regulated educational environment where students receive quality instruction from accredited professionals. By curbing the influence of unregulated private institutions and prioritizing formal education channels, the government aims to uphold the integrity of Algeria’s education system while ensuring student welfare.
