Zitouni Reaffirms State’s Commitment to Stabilize Coffee Prices and Protect Citizens’ Purchasing Power

Algiers, Algeria | November 05th, 2024 — During a recent address in Constantine, Minister of Trade and Export Promotion Tayeb Zitouni reaffirmed the Algerian government’s commitment to ensuring the availability and price stability of essential consumer goods, with a specific focus on coffee. Highlighting the government’s active steps to curb market irregularities caused by intermediaries and speculators, Zitouni emphasized that these entities have been “identified,” and that the state remains steadfast in protecting citizens’ purchasing power.

“The law will be applied with full rigor,” declared Zitouni, stressing the government’s zero-tolerance approach. He cited Executive Decree No. 24-279, issued on August 20, 2024, which strictly limits retail coffee prices and sets maximum profit margins for import, wholesale, and retail distribution. Zitouni confirmed that these regulatory measures are being enforced meticulously to prevent unwarranted price hikes.

To further stabilize the coffee market, Zitouni announced new import policies granting access to public operators like Groupe Agro-Industrie (AGRODIV), enabling the state to play a direct role in coffee imports and reduce reliance on intermediaries. He also revealed ongoing efforts to expand the availability of large-scale retail outlets nationwide through domestic investments and international partnerships. These measures aim to enhance market accessibility and affordability, with several international brands expressing interest in entering the Algerian market.

Zitouni’s comments were made at the inauguration of the National Production and Exportation Fair in Constantine, which gathers over 120 exhibitors at the Ahmed-Bey Hall (Zénith). This event underscores Algeria’s drive to bolster local production and strengthen its export potential, as the government prioritizes economic self-sufficiency and price stability for citizens amidst global market challenges.
