Nbookini: Algeria’s First Startup Dedicated to Audio Books

Bridging the Gap Between Readers and Authors Through Digital Innovation

ALGIERS- In the realm of literature, where the written word holds sway, a new frontier has emerged in Algeria with the inception of Nbookini, the country’s pioneering startup dedicated to audio books. Spearheaded by Feriel Benslim, the visionary behind this innovative venture, Nbookini seeks to revolutionize the way Algerians engage with literature, offering over 200 titles in audio format across genres ranging from novels to history, literature, and children’s books.

The genesis of Nbookini dates back to the onset of the Covid pandemic, when Feriel, intrigued by the concept of audio books, embarked on a journey to explore this uncharted territory in Algeria. Despite the country’s vibrant literary scene, characterized by 500 publishing houses and a dynamic literary community, the realm of audio books remained largely untapped.

“I conceived the project as a digital solution,” explains Feriel, drawing from her background in audiovisual production and voiceover work. “Having acquired the technical expertise over years of experience, I saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between readers and authors through audio books.” To bring her vision to fruition, Feriel opted to incubate her project within the framework of an entrepreneurship program, seeking guidance and support for its development.

Under the mentorship of the WomWork incubator, Feriel underwent a year-long training program, receiving managerial guidance and support in the establishment of her startup. The core objective of Nbookini is to promote literacy and make books accessible to all, transcending barriers of time and space. “An audio book accompanies you everywhere,” Feriel notes. “Whether you’re commuting, exercising, or working, it offers the flexibility to immerse yourself in literature anytime, anywhere.”

Moreover, audio books offer the added advantage of affordability and accessibility to titles that may not be readily available in traditional bookstores. Despite the nascent adoption of audio books among Algerian readers, Feriel believes that concerted efforts from publishers and authors are essential to raise awareness and cultivate a culture of audio book consumption.

One of the unique features of the Nbookini platform is its offering of audio books on a per-title basis, rather than through subscription models. This approach ensures that authors receive a percentage of each sale, thereby incentivizing content creation and fostering a sustainable ecosystem for literary expression.

The latest addition to the Nbookini catalog is “Sierra De Muerte” (The Mountains of Death) by Algerian author Abdelouheb Aïssaoui. Feriel emphasizes the meticulous process involved in producing audio books, from ensuring flawless narration to perfecting pronunciation, particularly in phonetic languages like Arabic.

In a bid to expand its reach beyond Algeria, Nbookini has forged partnerships with publishers and authors from across the Arab world. Through collaboration with industry experts like Alaa Ahmed, a Palestinian audio book specialist based in Abu Dhabi, Nbookini has welcomed renowned publishing houses and authors from Egypt and the UAE into its fold.

Despite the burgeoning interest in audio books among Arab audiences, Feriel acknowledges that greater efforts are needed to fully capitalize on this emerging market. She advocates for a holistic approach to book promotion, recognizing that audio books represent a complementary format alongside print and digital editions.

As Nbookini continues to pioneer the audio book landscape in Algeria and beyond, Feriel remains optimistic about the platform’s potential to elevate Algerian literature on the global stage. With plans to integrate international payment methods and expand its network of publishers and authors, Nbookini is poised to redefine the reading experience for audiences far and wide.
